Macklemore’s two-wheeled obsession

Not much has been heard from Macklemore after his 2012 number one single “Thriftshop” became permanently embedded in everybody minds from relentless radio rotation, and he’s getting a little more time in the spotlight with his new hit “Downtown”. The new song is pretty good, but it’s the video that really makes this song awesome. And he has gathered together quite an ensemble for this old school rap/rock opera epic. Hip Hop legends Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz are featured and rock singer Eric Nally (formally from Cincinnati rock group Foxy Shazam) provides the vocals for the hook.

The song is being described as a sequel to “Thriftshop” and is essentially about Macklemore’s new low-budget moped. An obviously simple concept that he uses to get inspired about everything retro and vintage. But it doesn’t get overly cheesy, by keeping the retro shtick minimal, and adding authenticity to the vibe with the old school rap legends featured on the track, the retro theme, although done a million times, somehow fits well with Macklemore.

And while intellectually it may be considered to be a song without much substance, I think that’s more or less intended. It’s Macklemore’s clever rhymes about things on two wheels, the fun outfits, and Eric Nally’s performance that really make the video standout. Nelly’s epic entrance on the chariot made out motorcycles is one of the most awesome things I’ve ever seen in a long time. And… turns out Macklemore’s actually got some pretty sweet dance moves.

(Cs5711) Good way to introduce people to different types of music. I liked Pina Colata, but I love Beethoven.

I love Macklemore as well. His songs aren’t only about drugs, hoes, and money like a lot of rap that is out there today. The songs have more substance and originality, or there is an important message he is trying to convey like with his big hit “Same Love”. His newest single is pretty catchy, but what I love most about it is Eric Nally- his vocals and his very sturdy knees. For me, there are moments when Nally is singing and it’s very reminiscent of a huge legend we all have heard of- the great MJ aka Michael Jackson. #cs5711

I really like Ryan Lewis’s part! It just brings the whole song together. When Thriftshop first came out I didn’t like it. I thought it was really cheesy but started to really like it after a while. Now I really enjoy Macklemore’s songs. He has a different sound in the rap world. #CS5711
